Welcome to the website for Ancestors’ Voices, a continuation of the Slave Trade Legacies Project
In this phase of the project we will be working again with the University of Nottingham and with heritage organisations, namely Cromford Mill (part of Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site) which relied on cotton picked by enslaved Africans to build the UK’s material wealth through the industrial revolution and Newstead Abbey – a well-known country estate with less well-known links to the enslavement of Africans on a sugar plantation in Jamaica.
In the process of working with these two sites, we hope to bring about cultural change in both institutions. We particularly want to ensure that the humanity and contributions of our ancestors are recognised and their voices heard.
